Grant Description
Grants of up to $2,500 and in-kind resources to USA, Canada, Latin America, and Caribbean organizations for community and youth events related to the study of birds. This grant includes free training and materials in addition to funding. Activities should center Equity, Diversity, Justice, and Inclusion in birdwatching and ornithology. Celebrate Urban Birds will prioritize community-led applications that focus on sharing community knowledge and expertise and emphasize culture and the arts.

Celebrate Urban Birds strives to co-create bilingual, inclusive, and equity-based community science projects that serve communities that have been historically underrepresented or excluded from birding, conservation, and citizen science. The project seeks to promote better science through equitable knowledge sharing, increased access, centering missing voices and experiences, and intentionally advocating for community ownership and scientific research leadership. Together with participating communities, the project has co-developed processes to co-design, pilot, and implement scientific research and programming while focusing on race and equity.

Requirements for proposals:

  • Center Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in Birdwatching
  • Include bird observation
  • Incorporate greening or habitat improvement for the birds
  • The arts and culture should be integrated in a meaningful, inclusive, and authentic way

All applicants will receive free training, downloadable materials, and resources to bring their ideas to life, including proposals that Celebrate Urban Birds is unable to fund. No experience with birds is required.
